Layers of pine, balsamic, kirsch, and menthol emerge from the 2019 Barolo Tortoniano, balanced nicely with the floral perfume of pressed roses. A medium-bodied and well-structured red, it has ripe tannins, a fresh spine of acidity, and lingering notes of leather and fresh soil. It is charming now, but it certainly has the structure to drink well over the next 8-10 years.

Raspberry, cherry, rose and mint aromas and flavors highlight this elegant red. Harmonious and bright, with a silky feel and a light dusting of powdery tannins on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2026 through 2040. 5,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.

The 2019 Barolo Tortoniano is a fine entry-level offering from Chiarlo. Sweet dried cherry, tobacco, cedar, dried flowers, mint and orange peel are nicely lifted on this mid-weight Barolo. Open in its flavors, with a good deal of complexity, the 2019 comes across as a wine to drink over the next handful of years, but not more.
